Rewari (Haryana), Jan 23 (PTI) A dispute between the Bawal municipal committee and local Panchayat over the proprietorship of the venue of a service centre here turned violent, following which police had to resort to lathicharge to control agitating groups.

The incident took place last evening soon after Haryana Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav laid the foundation stone of the service centre at Bawal, police said.

Bawal municipal chief Chanderpal Chokan and several municipal councillors insisted that since the land belonged to the municipal committee, the foundation stone must carry the names of municipal committee. On the other hand, Bawal Block Development and Panchayat Officer Janki Prasad claimed that they held proprietary rights of the land.

Consequently the name of the panchayat department was inscribed on the foundation stone, laid by the Finance Minister. This was, however, opposed by the municipal chief and other residents of the town, official sources said.

When Yadav was leaving the place after the event, the protest turned violent with some people even pelting stones.

Following this, the police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to quell the agitators.
The rioters also pulled down the structure of the foundation stone laying ceremony.
The police have registered a case of rioting and destruction of government property against some 50-60 people.
