GURGAON: The development of the second phase of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Project between Rewari and Dadri has brought in environmental consultancy services to look into the rehabilitation and restoration of the forests falling on the proposed project route as part of the Environmental Assessment Impact (EAI) report.

One consultancy would be hired in each district and samples of the plant species would be extracted from every area falling in the corridor line. A team of experts would visit each ecologically sensitive area.

K C Meena, conservator of forests, South Circle (Gurgaon), confirmed that environmental assessment had begun in consultation with the department.

Along with public consultation to know about the various aspects of forest studies

and information about uses of various plant species by villagers, local plant species which are important for maintaining the habitat around the stretch shall also be identified, said Meena.

These will improve ecology and the socio-economic status of the area, added Meena.

Digital photographs shall be taken by recording the data related to each photograph in terms of elevation and coordination of the corridor, said Meena.

GURGAON: In what comes as a relief for train commuters to Jaipur from the city, the North Western Railway has laid a new line between Rewari and Jaipur.

Till now, there used to be only a single line on this route and many trains, including Rajdhani and Garib Rath, used to halt for hours because of this impediment. With doubling of this line, commuters can expect the journey time to be cut short by at least an hour.

The line is now ready to use with the commissioner of railway safety giving his nod after inspection on Wednesday. Railway authorities are expecting to receive the required safety certificate in a day or two before launching operations on the line.

"This line is made in such a way that trains can run at a speed of 200 kmph. Work on laying the second line was started in 2006 and was divided into three phases. Phase one is now ready and the track linking work between Rewari and Alwar is on. We expected to fish that work by March," said a railway official.

Commuters are looking forward to a faster train ride to the Pink City. "Most of the time, people prefer to travel by road to Jaipur just to save time. I usually prefer trains for their comfort, but on this route I commute by road only. I am sure many passengers like me would now consider taking the train since it would also be economical than buses," said Pramod Kumar, a frequent traveler to Jaipur.

Rewari (Haryana), Jan 23 (PTI) A dispute between the Bawal municipal committee and local Panchayat over the proprietorship of the venue of a service centre here turned violent, following which police had to resort to lathicharge to control agitating groups.

The incident took place last evening soon after Haryana Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav laid the foundation stone of the service centre at Bawal, police said.

Bawal municipal chief Chanderpal Chokan and several municipal councillors insisted that since the land belonged to the municipal committee, the foundation stone must carry the names of municipal committee. On the other hand, Bawal Block Development and Panchayat Officer Janki Prasad claimed that they held proprietary rights of the land.

Consequently the name of the panchayat department was inscribed on the foundation stone, laid by the Finance Minister. This was, however, opposed by the municipal chief and other residents of the town, official sources said.

When Yadav was leaving the place after the event, the protest turned violent with some people even pelting stones.

Following this, the police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to quell the agitators.
The rioters also pulled down the structure of the foundation stone laying ceremony.
The police have registered a case of rioting and destruction of government property against some 50-60 people.
