Yesterday, a bank in Rewari was robbed and the burglars stole Rs 82 Lakh (81.46 to be precise). However, all the cash was in old currency notes. This is an alarming issue because this bank has been robbed twice in the last year.
On the night intervening Saturday and Sunday, Punjab National Bank located in Khera Alampur village in Rewari, that stood sans security guards, was robbed.
The burglars broke the window to enter the bank and, with the help of a cutter, cut the safe open.
The money that was stolen was in the denomination of INR 500 and INR 1000 -- old currency notes.
The robbery came to people's notice on Sunday morning, which is when they informed the police.
Upon reaching there, the police blamed it on the bank for lack of security and carelessness.
“The branch is situated in a secluded area. They didn’t have a night guard. The burglars would have thought of targeting the new currency, but the bank hadn’t received it yet. The branch had only a couple of new Rs 2,000 notes, which were in the lower section of the safe and probably remained unseen,” DSP Kumar said.
Last year, the same bank was robbed on October 7, 2015.
